Such thing intended to reduce IMD distortions when working on high sample rates. Should I insert it in the beginning of audio processing chain or just before output limiter or after it or between each plugin? I don’t know. I don’t work with high-res. But I like to listen high-res music through it. The depth is greatly increased and mid-range becomes pristine clean. I use this plugin with George Yohng VST Wrapper for Foobar player.
This is the topic about the theory behind this plugin:

The most impressive commit is from Niklas (post #203):
I experimented with the Ultrasonic filter on a just-for-fun master at 96kHz. I had about 10 plugins in a chain (all producing harmonic distortion of various degrees, mainly Acustica Audio Aqua and Nebula instances) and smashed into Voxengo Elephant ridiculously hot (limiting up to 8dB at best). I inserted Ultrasonic filter first in the chain and then after (and thus before) each and every plugin, including after elephant (so actually after the limiting.. just before final dither). The difference is ASTONISHING!! It is so ridiculously obvious and much better with the filters than without. A truly mind-blowing “WTF???!!” experience for me. It basically removed a lot of problems I’ve identified in mixes and previous masters that had heavy processing with a lot of harmonics.. mainly that nasty build up of “ringing” around 2.3 to 4kHz area. It also cleared out the congested mids and lower mids.
This is a game changer for me. I will not do any more high resolution mastering without this filtering. Period. Heck, I will never mix at high resolution again without this plugin inserted all over the place.
mmmmm to quote Black Sabbath: “what is this that stands before me…?”
Previous unreleased version had output “Your system bandwidth is optimal” when worked 44.1/48k. That relaxed me and I keep using low sample rates 🙂
haha! don’t trust your ears, just do what the plug-ins says… =)
I really not understand how tu use, seems so subtle, but in practice is a LPF???
Oh, Marry Christmas! 🙂
It’s linear phase variable slope LPF with optional dry mix. LPF is focused on frequencies above 20 kHz. The question is, how does it alter the sound and is it good? It’s a kind of experimental research…
mmmmmmm everything seems rational but why would you use the optional dry mix?????
Thanks, but why filter is not so steep as brickwall (elliptic one, for example)? Can you make it more steeper?
EN: Also, it doesn’t work with 44.1k/48k – “Your system bandwidth is optimal”.
Why is it so, if I want to filter above 20 kHz up to 22.05/24 kHz ????? I think it is more useful when you want to filter your aliasing/distortions while project is mixing/mastering at lower sample-rates.
44.1k/48k – “Your system bandwidth is optimal”.
This makes me wonder if I should still use the internal oversample option in Limit No.6. I should really pay it a listen but theory can be so influential…
The only bad effect of oversampling in Limiter6 (excluding high CPU usage) is transient smearing. SlickEQ/Kotelnikov have better resampling filters so I should replace Limiter6 ones. If you use Limiter6 on high sample rates it’s a matter of taste to use oversampling or not. Speaking of Ultrasonic filter, I’d recommend to use it before Limiter6 because Ultrasonic filter increases signal peaks due to Gibbs effect. Hmm, but technically this filter should be inserted inside Limiter6 just before output ISP section…
hahaha! well there you have two new ideas for Limit No.6 V2, or maybe Limit No.7… =)
I’m surprised that oversampling can be a matter of taste, one would have thought it makes things better no matter what, and that you get to choose to use it or not depending on your CPU usage. Thanks for the clarification Vlad.
With all respects, would not be more useful to a linear phase HPF?
Isn’t this exactly that?
Excuse Me all, I’ve write incorrectly (Google Translator misunderstand)…
With all respects, would not be more useful a linear phase HPF?
Regards
@Turello = That’s what this is. a Linear-Phase LPF aboe 20khz
@vladg = as a REAPER user, you must be aware of ReaFIR – which I believe uses linear phase FIR filters but is a FFT based processor which doesn’t have any slope on the filters.
I’ve been experimenting with this for LPF and HPF steeper-than-everyting-else and 100%-distortion-free. What are your thoughs on this idea????
Mmmh, I like to wait for the new version of NOVA…
‘System bandwidth close to audible bandwidth
Filter bypassed’
showing this message. the plugin is bypassed. help me..!
I’ve tested using this on several 96k mixes which include somewhat long fx chains, inserting instances between every effect. I’ve been setting them to be more subtle/higher cutoff on the master buss, moderate on busses, and deeper on individual instruments. The results have been noticeable indeed! I am discovering extra clarity in the upper mids and less overall muddiness. It may seem counter-intuitive to increase the clarity of the upper part of the spectrum by removing part of the upper spectrum, but it absolutely works. I am also noticing, which i did not expect, that the stereo field is being affected as well… on one mix which was a bit narrow it seems to add width, and on another mix which was a bit wide it seemed to solidify the center. Further testing on my part is needed, but following this process seems to subtly “automatically” balance the stereo width in a pleasing fashion.
Thank you for this excellent review Animus!

This thing reminds me of Waves Maxxbass ( at least thats the way I’ve been using it ) with its inclusion of the mix control.
is there any plans for releasing the version where user can use filters for basic filtering tasks? Ore any plans for releasing 1pole filters for such tasks…
hm…
why delete the question? Is there something wrong in that message?
Is there an analogous general purpose sweepable FIR LPF, as found in resamplers, which would allow to roll off at an arbitrary cutoff such as 16k?
